Can't open SharePoint documents in Office 2010
Hi, I have a SharePoint 2010 standalone installation and a SP 2007 with SQL back-end installation for testing and proof of concept demonstrations. All the servers are running Windows 2008 Server and are on a vSphere 4.0 ESX server as virtual machines. Most of the pilot team are on Office 2007 and are working fine with the installations. I am running Office 2010 (not beta) and am unable to open any Word or Powerpoint files in a standard Project site's Shared Documents library. (I can open a word document stored and linked from a publishing site.) Whether I browse to the file or click the link in a search results page, Powerpoint and Word load up but before I get any login prompt or application screen appearing, the application crashes. This occurs whether I open the document Read only or click the implicit check out 'Edit' button. If I check the document out to my local drafts folder I can open normally. As I can't find anything about this on the internet I'm guessing it's not a common occurence!

I should also point out that I'm running IE8. I've just downloaded the latest version of Firefox and it appears to work fine with Word now using that. (Settings imported from IE8.) This isn't much help as we're an IE company and I'm not sure how Firefox handles SharePoint downloads! Also Powerpoint wasn't fixed by this, all very strange!

Hi Simix, Thank you for share your problem. Do you mean that you can’t open office files with IE8 normally, but can open them with some other browsers? If it is so, I think it is because you has CA pest control running which does realtime scanning and prevents it. Disable CA pest control service using msconfig CA’s antivirus service and you’ll be able to open the files successfully. You can try to do the following steps to solve your problem---switch off checkbox Automaticaly detect setting in IE8 / Tools / Internet Options / Connections / LAN settings / Automatic configuration. Hope these can help you to solve your problem. Best regards.

Hi edwyn_peng. Thank you for your suggestions, I did have detect automatic settings checked, I disabled this but unfortunately it made no difference. I'm unable to find anything that describes the CA pest control service, are you able to tell me where to look for this please? It's correct that using IE8 the word or powerpoint files won't open but using Firefox, Word files will open.

I believe I have found the reason! I rebuilt my laptop with Windows 7 professional, fully updated it and then installed Office 2010. Success! I could open anything in SharePoint with no application crashes. I then installed SharePoint Designer 2010 and sure enough Word and Powerpoint started to behave in exactly the same way, just as it has downloaded the document and is in the 'Processing' phase of the splash screen Word and Powerpoint crash. I have since uninstalled SharePoint Designer and the crashes are still happening. :( If anyone can shed any light on this that would be great, hopefully it may be a pointer for others with similar problems.

A system restore to before installing SharePoint Designer 2010 fixed this. I've reported this as a bug to Microsoft.
