Can't open IRM protected document in office applications and office web apps

I'm using SharePoint 2013 Enterprise with Office Web Apps 2013 and Information Rights Management Configured. (All of our servers are on-prem including the ADRMS)

I have two universal distribution groups that I have users assigned to.

SharePoint-RMSReadOnly
SharePoint-RMSEdit

I am unable to open IRM protected documents from sharepoint in Office Web Apps or the associated Office Applications.

When I open the document in Office Web Apps I get the following error

Sorry, Word Web App can't open this document because it's protected by Information Rights Management (IRM). To view this document please open it in Microsoft Word.

When click "Open in Word" I'm prompted for my domain credentials. I enter my credentials and receive this error/prompt.

This content could not be accessed using your current credentials do you want to use your microsoft account to access this content?

The Permissions on the document I'm testing with I have the Read Only distro group in the Read Only section and the Edit distro group in the Edit section.

I've tried using accounts from both groups to access the document, but receive the same errors on both. I've also read that you should be able to access IRM documents through Office Web Apps in Read-Only Mode.

How do I configure IRM so I can access IRM Protected documents in Office Web Apps and Office Applications?

Thanks

Hi James,

For documents cannot be opened in Office web apps, I recommend you to go to Library Settings > Information Rights Management > check if the setting below has been checked. If yes, please uncheck it.

For documents cannot be opened in Office application, I recommend you to check the permissions for the users in the documents.

Please select the document which cannot be opened in Office application > click Shared With in the ribbon > click Advanced > click Check Permissions in the ribbon to check the permission of the users on the document.

Best regards,

Victoria

Hey Victoria,

I was able to get the IRM documents Opening in the Desktop Applications, but I'm Still not able to get them to open in Office Web Apps.

I check my IRM Settings and I already had "Prevent opening documents in the browser for the Document Library" unchecked

I'm still not sure why it will not open the IRM Protected documents in Office Web Apps 2013

Hi James,

Does this issue occur with all the libraries?

Please also check if the issue occur with other users.

From the post below, it seems that changing the permission for IRM documents will make the documents cannot be opened in Office Web Apps.

I recommend to re-configure the IRM for the library and then compare the results.

Victoria

Hi James,

Does this issue occur with all the users?

Please use site administrator to view document in browser to see if the issue still occurs.

Please also note that the preview for documents with IRM in Office web apps is not supported for now.

Best regards,
