Can't edit documents after migrating to WSS 3.0 64bit
We just migrated our WSS 3.0 to 64bit environment. After the migration, everything seems to be working fine except when users open a file (Word or Excel) and click the Edit Document or Edit Workbook button , they get an error message:
"A problem occurred while connecting to the server. If the problem continues, contact your administrator."
I've verified that they have proper permission.
Old farm config (32bit environment):
WFE is running Windows 2003 R2 Standard 32bit, WSS 3.0 RTM (12.0.0.4518)
Database is running SQL 2005 Standard 32bit SP2
WFE and database are separate servers
New farm config (64bit environment):
WFE is running Windows 2008 R2, WSS 3.0 64bit SP2 (12.0.0.6421)
Database is running SQL 2005 Enterprise 64bit SP1
WFE and database are on the SAME server
Steps we did during the migration:
1) On old farm, update WSS to SP2.
2) On new farm, install OS, SQL and WSS.
3) Follow instruction on this link to backup and restore WSS_Content database:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc512723(office.12).aspx
4) On new farm, create web application, and point the WSS_Content database to the one restored from the old farm, and restart IIS.
As I mentioned in the beginning, the new farm seems to be working. It's just when the users with appropriate permission try to edit a document, they will get that error message. One thing I should also point out is that the DB server on new
farm has different name than the old one. Hope someone could give me advice. Thanks.

Hi,
According to your description, in my opinion, I also have verified that they have proper permission. I have
found a useful blog about how to move/migrate SharePoint list items/documents and preserve metadata properties at the same time. For more information, please refer to:

Hi David,
Thanks for your reply. I'm using WSS 3.0 and Content and Structure is not available in WSS 3.0. I'm having problem editing documents after database migration, so the suggestion provided on the link does not apply to my issue.

Hi David,
I am facing exact same problem, We had also migrated from 32 bit to 64bit. Did u get any fix for this?
O/S = Win2k3 to Win2k8 64 bit
TFS 2010 -->TFS2010 (because i need to upgrade OS from 2k3 to 2k8.
SQL Server 2k8 --->SQL Server 2k8
WSS3.0 --> WSS3.0 64bit.
I cannt edit excel files (i did not try word docs). I get error "A problem occurred while connecting to the server. If the problem continues, contact your administrator." I have two TFS setup and i am facing problem on both of them. Both were migtrated from
32 to 64 bit.

Are you using Office 2007 or 2010? For Office 2007, I have to Check Out the file first before I can edit it. For Office 2010, I have to upgrade WSS 3.0 to Sharepoint 2010 Foudation in order to edit the file. Hope this helps.

Hi Shawn,
We are using Office Professional 2010. I have configured test environment fresh installation of Win2K8R2 server, TFS 2010, SQL 2008R2 and WSS3.0. I don't have any issue in test environment. I am facing problem in production environment.

Hi Guys,
Finally i got a solution:- On Web Server, i removed the WebDAV Publishing role service from the Web
Server role on the server. That required a restart of the server (i restart IIS
only) and after that i can edit files.
