Branch Distribution point in SCCM 2007 x Distribution Point in 2012 R2

Hello to all, I'm involved in a project to migrate SCCM 2007 to SCCM 2012 R2. As known, migration is done in side by side mode, i.e., install new SCCM 2012 R2 hierarchy and proceed to migrate/recreate source components in SCCM 2012 R2, deploy new clients and remove source hierarchy.

The question to this scenario is targeted to SCCM 2007 Branch Distribution Points (BDPs). Current SCCM 2007 SP1 has aprox. 150 BDPs and I'm wondering what would the be the best option to follow with DPs in SCCM 2012 R2 because requirements are higher (8Gb of RAM, 2 Cores, etc) and customer does not have enough machines with this configuration to be DP in SCCM 2012 R2. Possible options:

1- Install one DP in the new Primary Site that will also be Distributed cache mode, considering that all remote clients support branch cache mode and can distribute content among local peers. Currently, several distributions are made without DPs on remote sites

2- Install SCCM 2012 R2 DPs in several sites to minimize traffic impact.

    Inputs are welcomed.

    Regards, EEOC

What hardware is being used for the BDPs right now?
Your question cannot be answered without knowing all details like WAN speed, number of clients per location, amount of packages to be deployed etc.

Hello Torsten, thanks for your reply. Here follow the answers:

1- Average BDP HW is:  HD: 300 Gb and 100Gb free ; RAM: 2Gb ; Clock: Pentiium III 3 GHz.

2- Average WAN Speed: basically two options --> 512Kbs or 2Mb

   3- Average #clients/site : 65% < 10 machines and 35% have 11< #clients < 70 (just two sites have 60 and 70 respectivelly)

Hope this feedback can help your analysis.

   Regards, EEOC.
