Bilingual site - selecting correct variation based on langue settings in browser

Hi,

I have a bilingual site English/French. However, the French site is not being selected if my browser is set to French. I think this might have to do with the fact that in the "Variation Labels" under the heading "Hierarchy is created" is set to "No" for French. (We had to copy over the hierarchy to the French site manually as the sharepoint jobs weren't doing that. Is there anything else I can do to make the site select French correctly when the default language is set to French in the browser?

thanks,

She

Hi Sherazad,

According to your description, my understanding is that you want to set the language of the site based on the browsers language.

Yes, you can use variations to do it. And when you create a variation label for a language, you need to make sure the "Hierarchy is Created" is Yes.

More information about variations, you can refer to the link:

In addition, you can also choose without variations to do it. You can go to Site settings->Language settings, then select alternate languages(like French), click OK. After that, go to your IE options->Languages->Set Language Preferences, make the French is at the top(make sure your IE's language is French). Then refresh your site, its language should be French.

Hi Wendy,

Thanks for the response. My question is, how do I get "Hierarchy is created" set to yes, since the sharepoint jobs are doing it? Is there some kind of powershell command I can run to set it?

thanks,

Hi Sherazad,

The process of hierarchy creation will finish after Variation Create Hierarchy timer job and Variations Propagate Sites and Lists Job has completed. So, please run them. You can just run them via SharePoint Central Administration UI->Monitoring->Review job definitions, find Variation Create Hierarchy timer job and Variations Propagate Sites and Lists Timer Job, click "Run now".

Hi Wendy,

That is precisely the problem. No matter how many times I manually start the jobs, the "Hierarcy is created" flag never changes. From the variation log, the only job that seems to be running is the "Variation Page Propagation"

Hi Sherazad,

Please check variation log to find if there are some errors. Or, you can provide a screenshot about the variation log.

What template did you use for the site collection? Please create a new site collection using Publishing Portal template, then test again, compare the result.
