Best approach to upgrade MOSS 2007 from windows 2003 32-bit env. to windows 2008 64-bit env.
Hi, We have MOSS 2007 farm on windows 2003 32-bit with SQL server 2005 as a database. Sometimes we are getting "Read or write protected memory" error. The concurrent user count is 13,000 to 15,000. As a part of migration we are planning to move on windows server 2008 64-bit OS. We will have one web/app and one DB server with Windows 2008 R2 64-bit enterprise edition OS. Which is the best approach for migration? Is there any specific service/service pack/patches installation required for migration? Which type of specific steps needs to be followed ? Should I take care of any specific thing for OS up-gradation? Please advice. Regards, Dhaval Patel

You seem to have two issues here, the protected memory error and a desire to upgrade. I would separate them as the first is not necessarily linked to the second as the first error is usually the result of a known defect: http://sharepoint.microsoft.com/blogs/fromthefield/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=47 Your upgrade should be carried out by reading up on your options for upgrading to 64bit. You can do this by upgrading the DB first, or the MOSS farm servers but read this to get you started: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd637753.aspx One other point - if you really do have 15,000 concurrent users then 1 web/app server isn't going to support them well and you should consider implementing a load balanced farm. Hi, Thanks for your reply. We will have load balanced farm for new implementation. We have already installed SP1 in our current setup. We have MOSS 2007 32 bit and SQL Server 2005 32 bit license installed on Windows 2003 32 bit server in the current setup. Do we need to procure 64bit version of MOSS and SQL Server for implementation on Windows 2008 64 bit OS? Regards, Dhaval Patel
