Backup VM Online failed

Hello,

I currently have the problem that my DPM Backup of 2 of my VMs is not working.

The VM is a 2008 R2 and the Hyper-V is a 2012R2. The newest Integration tools are already installed.
DPM is a 2012 R2 and both VMs are SQL Server.

When DPM tries to backup the VM after about 2 Minutes I get the following error on the DPM:

The VSS application writer or the VSS provider is in a bad state. Either it was already in a bad state or it entered a bad state during the current operation. (ID 30111 Details: VssError:The writer experienced a non-transient error. If the backup process is retried,
the error is likely to reoccur.
 (0x800423F4))

Within the VM itself I get the following error in the application log:

Level: Error
Source: vmicvss
EventID: 19
Description:
Not all the shadow volumes arrived in the guest operating system.

Could someone help me resolve this issue.

Thanks in advance

Paul

Hi

try to disable the Backup IS on the affecte VM

turnoff-backup-option

Backup the Server with DPM

activate the Backup IS again

run a Backup again, should now work

But, if you unchecked "BACKUP(VOLUME CHECKPOINT), VM go to backup in saved state mode.

Try perform only one machine in the node.

Execute this command in the node (CMD), and write  response :

vss admin list writers

tks!

Install kb2996928 in VM Windows Server 2008 R2

Assume that you run a backup requester application to perform a backup task on the computer.

In this scenario, the backup task fails, and you may receive the following error message that states the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) failed because of a time-out:

FAILED_AT_FREEZE (0x800423f2 - VSS_E_WRITERERROR_TIMEOUT)

Applies to

    • Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1, when used with:
    • Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter
    • Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise
    • Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard
    • Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation
    • Windows Server 2008 R2 for Itanium-Based Systems

Hi

Same problem here with a SBS 2011 VM running on a HyperV 2012 R2 Host.  Happens during Veeam application aware backup.

Did you find a solution?
