Backing up a Laptop to VHD
Hey folks, i need some help. i have been looking for this for a while and not sure. i am new to SCCM and not sure if it can be done. i just want to be able to take a laptop when someone quits or hands it in for a new one and back it up using SCCM to a
VHD, now i can currently do this to a .WIM file but VHD is a lot better for me. someone had mentioned to me that the new MDT 2012 can do either part or all, not sure. can someone suggest a way to do this. I again want to do this in a Task Sequence in SCCM
or Win PE.When in doubt...let Google help you out!

I think, VHD are not supported. However, you can create VHD from windows 7 machines
http://blogs.technet.com/b/aviraj/archive/2009/01/17/windows-7-boot-from-vhd-first-impression-part-1.aspx
and you can use vhd boot for OS deployment as mentioned in the below blog

no the second link is for deploying a VHD, i need to make a vhd from a machine. in the 2010 MDT toolkit you could use ZTIBackup to create a .wim file. i need to do something simalar and create a VHD instead of the wim. When in doubt...let Google help you out!

Why dont you use SCVMM? That has the functionality to convert physical to virtual with ease
That is also assuming you have a hyper-v server

we dont use Hyper-V, wish we did. now looking at the Disk2VHD that sounds promising. if can some help with creating a task sequence. here is what i have and not if it will work.
1. add a package for Disk2VHD and add to DP's
2. New TS
3. Restart Computer and on the options tab > _SMSTSInWinPE equals False
4. use toolkit from MDT 2010 or 2012
5. have collection Varible for ComputerBackupLocation > have to use collection due to geography.
6. make a run command line and place the command Disk2VHD * %ComputerBackupLocation%\cdrive.vhd with the package area checked and choosing the Disk2VHD.
In theroy that should work and will test tonight. anyone else has any ideas or helpful inut i would welcome it as i am new to all of this. When in doubt...let Google help you out!

"The subsystem needed to support the image type is not present. (Error: 80070134; Source: Windows)"
check the MDT forum, there are a few hits in there for this error (64bit-related, it seems)
are you using the TS from MDT2012b1 ?
i'm not sure if you can drop the disk2vhd output to a UNC? have you tried this manually?
the TS you are using is in Windows and not WinPE?Don

ah. I don't think you can use disk2vhd under WinPE, I think it needs full windows to use VSS.Don

Hi,
"The subsystem needed to support the image type is not present."
0x80070134
This may occur if the Task Sequence is set to use a 64-bit boot image.
Changed the boot image property (Task Sequence >Properties> Advanced> Check box option Use a boot
image) to 32-bit. This should work even for a task sequence that is trying to install a 64-bit OS image.
Regards,
Sabrina

assuming your TS is running as LocalSystem, maybe disk2vhd could be throwing a dialog (which is going nowhere).
try using psexec -i -s cmd.exe, and spawn your disk2vhd commandline within that, to see if it is raising some interaction.

so how did you go with my suggestion to test it using psexec ?
could you expand on "it still isn't working"? (describe please)
what else have you tried?
there is a "product" called P2V for Software Assurance, which is based on disk2vhd, so it could be helpful to you?Don
