BSOD on Windows 8.1 laptop since installing DPM 2012 R2 agent

Hi,

Since upgrading from DPM2012 SP1 to DPM2012 R2 my Windows 8.1 laptop now frequently crashes with a BSOD during a sync.  It is usually ok for the 1st sync after a reboot, but a 2nd sync (4hrs later by policy) will cause the laptop to stop responding and eventually reboot.

I didn't have this issue at all with the SP1 agent.

The event log has no events for the error, just the usual last reboot was unexpected event and this one:

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck.  The bugcheck was: 0x00000133 (0x0000000000000001, 0x0000000000001e00, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\MEMORY.DMP. Report Id: 120513-5250-01.

Is there anywhere I can post the dmp files to have them looked at?

Cheers,

James

Hi

Did you upgrade the agent on your machine?

Perhaps uninstall, reboot and then fresh install the new agent?

Hi, yes the agent was updated to 4.2.1205.0.

I've tried an uninstall/reboot/reinstall/reboot, and had a BSOD again when it started backing up.

Previously if I left Outlook and Lync (both 2013) closed it would complete a sync without blue screening, since the reinstall it blue screens with both those applications closed.

I have now uninstalled it and it hasn't crashed since, but that's not ideal as Im not getting backups done.

Ever get a resolution for this James? I'm seeing freezes on Windows 8.1 x64 (not BSOD), typically with Outlook and Lync open, and trying to figure it out. Removing DPM fixes it.

Hi,

I fixed it by removing DPM from my laptop, and it hasn't effected any of our other Win8.1 machines. I've not tried reinstalling the DPM agent since.

Sounds similar though - definitely an issue with backing up the PST while Outlook / Lync were open.

This has helped us somewhat reduce the frequency of problems, but not eliminate it entirely.Optimizing

Not sure if this is too late for you but what AV are you running?

We had the same issue here, absolutely no issues with Win 7 machines but Win 8.1 would crash/hang each time a consistency check was run.

We run McAfee VSE and HIPS and VSE was definitely to blame as turning it off resolved the problem. We were already excluding the DPMRA.exe process but it seems that was not enough.

After working through the DPM processes and a lot of reboots later it seems that simply excluding the DPM client installation folder and sub folders from "On-Access Default Process Polices" sorts it out.

It now seems to be stable on the problem test laptops which crashed/hung each time a CC was run and I have been unable to replicate the problem with the exclusion in place.

Hi, thanks for posting.

Running SCEP2012 for antivirus.  I have excluded the DPM directories and re-enabled protection on my Win8.1 laptop.  So far so good, will confirm if it gets through a few days without a crash.

Cheers,

Cool, hope it works for you.

Update on McAfee HIPs, there is a hotfix (McAfee Host IPS 8.0 Hotfix 981275) from McAfee that fixes a problem with it killing the VSS service (and crashing the OS) when multiple snapshots are taken or it's under load:

We've just applied that too and it seems pretty stable now.
