Avoid updating XP Workstations Twice
I need to upgrade from SP1 to SP2. The Site server has R2 installed. I would like to install R3 and SP2 at one time but at this time I am limited to just installing SP2 (don't ask - politics). After installing SP2 without R3 I would need to upgrade
all the clients to version 4.00.6487.2000. correct? Then at a later time (maybe months) I am planning on installing R3. Would I need to revisit all the XP workstations once again and install the latest client? or is the R3 just for the Site systems?
Thanks

Hi,
R3 comes with a pre-req hotfix(kb977384) which must be installed on all site systems and clients with the admin console installed, and yes it has a client update aswell.
R3 itself is only for site systems and admin console installations but the hotfix is also for the client to be able to support Power Management.

Jorgen's answer is correct (but may be a litle confusing).
SP2 requires the client to be updated and R3 requires a hotfix on all the clients.
You can easily combine these into one push however using the PATCH public property on the client install.
Basically, when you install the updated SP2 client agent, it is a complete reinstall of the client agent which you can easily push out using COnfigMgr itself and the updated client package. Thus, you can install the R3 client hotfix at the same time by adding
the PATCH= public property to the msiexec command-line.
Here's a complete guide on installing hotfixes:
