Authentication Sharepoint 2007 and IIS
What are the best practices in regards to IIS 7.0 authentication and Sharepoint? What should be enabled in IIS, and in sharepoint to create the optimal login environment for internal domain users, and users accessing the Sharepoint site via the web. I inherited this sharepoint site and I want to make it more efficient as some of our remote users have a tough time getting into the site. Everyone that accesses the site has an Active Directory account on our domain. Thanks for any help provided. MBMatt

you may give more details on the difficulties. Seems that you should have ISA server and AAM configuration to enable external users to access your site with domain accounts. This is the classic post on how to set up AAM with ISA. http://sharepoint.microsoft.com/blog/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?List=72c1c85b%2D1d2d%2D4a4a%2D90de%2Dca74a7808184&ID=804&Web=fb61b44c%2D8862%2D4e1d%2D875b%2D898c0ed5f1fc

Thank you for the response. Let me try to explain better using examples of web addresses etc. We have a remote site https://remote.companyname.org:987 Users from home access the site, and they are prompted for a login and password. In IIS, I want to determine what authentication behind that login prompt is best fit for our organization's needs. All of our users are located in Active Directory, and I want their login to our site to be as easy as possible so what authentication methods should be enabled in IIS? Thanks for your time. MBMatt

Not sure how yours was implemented; we have similar requirements: we did by MS ISA and SP AAM to expose a nice url for employees to access the site from home. I never tried to log in the sp site from a computer which never joins the domain before. I always bring my work computer home and so usually the credentials are saved on the computer. If to type the credentials, would be just one time. pretty smooth to us. As to authentication, it is configured in SP for web application: NTLM or Kerberos. In both your case and our case, would not be forms-based. The firewall, ISA servers forward requests and should pass credentials too, if I did not mistake here. you may use IIS to check the current configuration of the IIS sites; SP central admin to check SP configuration (especially AAM).
