Another Alerts Question
I have two Sharepoint test systems. Alerts won't work on either - never have.I have a MOSS 2007 Standard install - 1 web server, 1 SQL server - and a WSS 3.0 install - 1 web server 1 SQL server. On each server the Immediate Alerts timer job status reads Initialized, 0%.I've done most of the testing on the MOSS 2007 system,The timer service runs on a domain account that is local admin on both the web and SQL serverThis system is part of an intranetI've tried pointing to our exchange server that serves as an SMTP server and to the local SMTP server on the web server.I can send email via telnet from the web server to the local SMTP and to the Exchange server and I get emails back fine from both.I'm able to set up immediate alerts - they show up in the db - but never register in the SMTP log as being sent. When I try to set up a new alert, the web page hangs and never finished executing, although the alert registers in the db. When I change something on the site that has an alert tied to it, it adds a record to the event cache table. I'm really stuck here. I've double-checked all the services (tried alternate admin acocunts), ran filemon and SQL profiler to see if something looks hung, but I can't find anything. Any ideas... anyone?

Thanks for the response, Ivan. The outgoing e-mail settings in the operations section of CA are filled out with the web server's name where I have sharepoint installed and where I have an smtp server configured. There is a valid reply-to and a valid from address. I've tried setting this to the Exchange server on the network that serves as an smtp server and to the IP address for that server as well. Still nothing. I decided to set it to the local smtp server since I can monitor the iis logs, etc. whereas I have no access to the Exchange server. These settings are present in the Application management outgoing email settings as well.In the farm topology section, the local server name has a "Windows SharePoint Services Outgoing E-Mail" listed as running. This morning I'm installing Wireshark to monitor port 25 to see if I can detect any activity when an alert fires. So, it looks like the system knows when an alert should be sent as it's writing that information to the database. However, it appears as though the breakdown happens sometime after that. Could the fact that the new alert page never finishes executing be a symptom of the same problem? From what I understand, there should be an email sent when a new alert is generated. In fact, as I'm writing this, it occurred to me that when I add a new user, the page never finishes loading, either. Hmmm.

I just added two new users. The first one, I left the checkbox checked to send a welcome email. The page never finished loading after I submitted the form. The user was added, however. For the next user, I unchecked the checkbox so no email would be sent and the page executed properly, taking me back to the People and Groups screen. This is very curious. No emails are sent for the alerts or to new users and the application seems to be hanging on screens where email notifications would be sent.

is there any firewall on your server? Do you have multiple IP's on the server? Can you verify that you can connect to local SMTP server? Is permission on local SMTP server set to allow relay from local server?RegardsIvan Bondy - MCPD, MCDBA, MCSA, MCTS - Sharepoint consultant If you get an answer to your question, please click the

Ivan,No firewall on the serverI can send email using a telnet session from the local server, port 25, so I think this is a suitable verification that the local SMTP server is working.I don't know what you mean by "Is permission on local SMTP server set to allow relay from local server?", but I'll dig around and try to figure out if I can determine that.

RJ, I'm having the exact same issue and can't seem to find anyway to fix it. I also have an open case with MS. Were you ever able to figure this one out? If so, any help is appreciated. This has been the most frustrating thing ever!!!

Hey IT-MikeI was able to resolve my issue in regards to the alerts. I am not sure if your issue might be the same or not.In our environment sharepoint was running on the ESX server. Microsoft had me install "Windows SDK for Windows Server 2008 and .NET Framework 3.5" and had me run C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.1\Bin\sporder.exe and move the priority of TCP/IP to the top of the list. Once that was done intial alerts email started to function right away when we created alerts. The immediate alert was still not functioning and the issue with that was alternate name mapping"Failed to initialize site collection for Subscription id: {2F47202E-1D9F-4CF0-B01F-98D58A3DBA1A}. Possibly incorrect siteurl http://blah for site collection Id: {1E5ED6D9-717E-440F-8EA7-91B4828FC69D},HRESULT 0x80070002"I correted the issue by entering the alternate url that the database knows and it worked.see the link the end post by John-evan http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepointgeneral/thread/2ced6b9a-156a-43f8-8c97-7b9db86a271eI hope this fixes your issue alsoRaj

Raj, I was on the forum posting an Exchange Server question and came back to follow up on this "killer" Sharepoint issue. Thanks for posting a solution. After jumping through hoops with MS technical support, they came back to me with the same resolution. Yes, the magic bullet is to run sporder.exe and move TCPto the top of the list. For me, UDP was listed 1st! As soon as that was changes, our WSS 3 starting firing off all the queud mail and alert are now working without the page hanging. Thanks, IT-Mike

I know this is an old thread, but in our work, it was still useful, so... Thanks Raj. This worked for my work too. Win2k3 Server, WSS3.0. Our server needed to have TCP moved to the top of the list. As a side note (for general info), you just need sporder.exe (and possibly the DLL) to fix this problem. You can install the SDK on any PC, and just run the tool on your server. I've also used the Windows 7 SDK on my PC, and sporder worked fine on the 2k3 server. Regards. cjba850

Bingo! The last Sophos Antivirus update installed Sophos Web Intelligence LSP and Sophos Web Intelligence IFSLSP above MSAFD Tcpip [TCP/IP] in the Windows Sockets stack. I moved Sophos down the stack on our WFEs, and emails are now functioning. This affected workflows, alerts and any other outgoing email from SharePoint. Great work Raj! Barry
