Alternative access mapping (when accessing the site it is asking for username and password)
Environment: - MOSS 2007 Issue: - Alternative access mapping (when accessing the site it is asking for username and password) We have a web application which is http://servername:portnumber, and the client wanted a valid URL. For which we have created a DNS entry and updated the Host file. We then made the changes in the iis (Under Multiple Identities) and also added the entry in SharePoint Alternative access mapping section. Now when we try to access the site with the new DNS entry, the username and the Password window pops up and when the right credentials are entered, it is not taking it and the login window appears again and again. What is that I am doing wrong.. I have done the same thing on other servers and it is working fine. ..Satyam

I've had better extending the site in central admin than doing it manually as you have done. You might want to try that instead.I hope this helps and answers your question-Jeff DeVerter, MCSERackspaceblog:http://www.social-point.comtwitter: http://www.twitter.com/jdeverter

Hi, Few questions. Are you using a proxy server? Also, within the title bar of the pop-up asking for user credentials, is it trying to connect to your url or server?Aaron------------------Aaron Rendell------------------

Hi Jeff, DeVerter, Kshitizs, Sree and Aaron Rendell, Thank you guys for all the advices. As a matter of fact the site in asking for the username and the password on the server, but when the same site is opened from the client computers, it opens with no issues...still researching will keep you guys posted about the same. The steps which i followed are as below. 1) Place a DNS entry called portal 2) On the SharePoint installed server went to C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\Hosts . Opened the hosts file with notepad and enter the IP address of the SharePoint server, gave space (or hit the tab button once) and then type the DNS name which is portal (e.g 172.18.00.00 portal)2) On the same server opened IIS (start-->RUN-->Inetmgr-->Enter)3) Expanded the folder web Sites and right clicked on the site and selected properties. On the tab "web Site", below web site Identification clicked on the button Advanced.4) Under Multiple Identities for the web site clicked on ADD, then in the TCP port enter 80 and in the Host Header Value type port, then clicked ok, ok and apply.5) went to the central administration and clicked on Operation, under Global configuration selected "Alternate Access Mapping" in here clicked on the web application (in our case http://servername:7788) was taken to a next page called :Edit Internal URLs" in here clicked the cancel button, when you do that you will be taken to another page called Alternate Access Mappings, in here clicked on Add Internal Urls, you will now be taken to another page called ADD Internal URLS . made sure that i have selected the right site collection (on the right side), then in the Add Internal Url typed http://portal and clicked Save. and then when i opened the site from the client computer the site worked like a cham. Aaron Rendell you did ask Also, within the title bar of the pop-up asking for user credentials, is it trying to connect to your url or server?Yes your are right it is trying to connect to the URL. Are you using a proxy server?i dont know and will be thankfull if you could tell me about it.Thanks,Satyam

Hi, On the SP server where its asking for your credentials, under internet options > connections , check to see if you have a proxy set-up and if so, do you have any proxy by-pass rules applied? (Client side, AD (GPO) could be populating this for you, hence why it works). On another note, i re-call reading about authentication issues when accessing the site on the server - do your crawl-rules work, could you check your site is being indexed correctly?. (if i remember correctly, there is a KB about this issue - ill try and dig it out). Aaron------------------Aaron Rendell------------------

Are you logged onto the server when this occurs? If this is when you notice the issue check out the LoopBack processingReferencehttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/896861The first method is to disable the loopback check by setting the DisableLoopbackCheck registry key.To have us fix this problem for you, go to the "Fix it for me" section. If you prefer to fix this problem yourself, go to the "Let me fix it myself" section. Fix it for me To set the DisableLoopbackCheck registry key automatically, click the Fix this problem link. Click Run in the File Download dialog box, and then follow the steps in the Fix it wizard-IvanIvan Sanders My LinkedIn Profile, My Blog, @iasanders.

Satyam, I am not sure do you still have the problem but I was having same problem as yours and I did the following. Tadaaa! problem solved. I hope this helps. Bruce Specify host names To specify the host names that are mapped to the loopback address and can connect to Web sites on your computer, follow these steps: Set the DisableStrictNameChecking registry entry to 1. For more information about how to do this, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 281308 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/281308/ ) Connecting to SMB share on a Windows 2000-based computer or a Windows Server 2003-based computer may not work with an alias name Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK. In Registry Editor, locate and then click the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\MSV1_0 Right-click MSV1_0, point to New, and then click Multi-String Value. Type BackConnectionHostNames, and then press ENTER. Right-click BackConnectionHostNames, and then click Modify. In the Value data box, type the host name or the host names for the sites that are on the local computer, and then click OK. Quit Registry Editor, and then restart the IISAdmin service.
