I want a process that will allow users to request accounts. Then, an admin will have the ability to approve or deny the request. If approved, an account will be created in AD and the user will be added to a particular group in SharePoint. Does something like this already exist or do I have to write it myself?

Create an anonymous site and have the page with a webpart with the list web part where users should request for the access. They may fill in the email address(mandatory) and justification fo the access. List may have a workflow to send the email to the administrator. Depending on the justification admin ma create the account in AD for the user and let it go from there. A custom workflow might run a script to create the account in AD (I am not a developer but a developer can put more light) else, having sharepoint in AD creation mode, user my create the accounts for themselves but it's not having the approval mechanism.I LOVE MS..... I want a more automated way of doing it. If there isn't anything out there then I will just write it myself.

Hi fubak, As far as I know, there isn't anything OOTB to achieve this. You may need to write it yourself. I am not a developer, but I found this link talking about programmatically add user to a SharePoint group.
