I have a sharepoint server named sharepoint1. I have dns aliased to route to that server using sp1. So when you type in sp1 it will take you to the site, but the sp1 is replaced with sharepoint1. How can i make it where the sp1 stays persistent throughout the entire site?

In Central admin, under Operations, select the web application for your site and add an Alternate Access Mapping (edit public URLs) for http://sp1 (probably under the Intranet zone, defzult is to stay with Windows authentication for that zone).
