Administration rights for a subsite in moss
Hi, I need to give Administration rights (add, delete users to lists, doc libs and etc) to particular subsite. The user is not in the list of Site Collection Administrators or any of administrators available in sharepoint. Please let me know how can I achieve this. Thanks, Naveen

Add the user to the subsite and assign him "full control" on the subsite. You may want to navigate to subsite-->site setting->Advanced permissions--> site permissions, either add the user to Owners group or add directly with Full control... This will work for you Thank You I LOVE MS..... Thanks and Regards, Kshitiz (Posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.)

for this you need to brack inheritance of rights from parent site.. once you breack it you will be able to add new user from 'peoples and groups list' or if you need it for single list then there as well brack and then add perticular user in list. but remember the user in a list should have permission to visit site (read permission on site) atleast.Regards, Vikas Patel.

As far as user administration is concerned, this should work. I agree some other stuff like adding webparts from site gallery and changing master pages etc might not work if user just have permissions on the subsite. Also, as soon as you add a user directly only to subsite, it break the permission inheritence.I LOVE MS..... Is giving Full Control equivalent to giving Site Administrator privileges? I doubt about that. And only a site administrator can give a site administrator privilege as far as I know.

Yes Farhan, I think you are right. I have added a user to Site Owners which has Full Control, still he has no access to some of the lists and doc libraries.

It may be that some of the lists have their own permissions which are preventing this from working. Other than making them a Site Collection Administrator (which is probably a bad idea), the only answer is to dig in and understand the existing permissions fully. Otherwise, it's a little like shooting fish in a barrel. M.Marc D Anderson - Sympraxis Consulting LLC - Marc D Anderson's Blog - @sympmarc - jQuery Library for SharePoint Web Services

Yes, some of the lists and doc libraries have their own permissions. My requirement is I have several sub sites and each sub site should have different administrators unlike Site Collection Administrators. Can't we create a new permission level ( something like sub site administrator) that can access all the content of the sub site irrespective of the permission levels for the lists, libraries ant etc as Site Collection Administrators. Thanks, Naveen

Almost, but not quite. Site Collection Administrators can do some things that aren't represented by the 32 permission settings, but I can't recall what at this very moment. If you really want that, then you should have separate Site Collections with different Site Collection Administrators. Site Collections are really permission boundaries more than anything else. I cannot have separate site collections now. Only two options available for me 1. To create a new permission level for sub sites administration. or 2. To add all the admins to Site Collection Administrators. One thing I'm not able to figure it out, is there a problem in SharePoint that doesn't support my requirement or anything wrong with my requirement. Thanks, Naveen

There is no such setting that will give Site Administrators access to _everything_. If that were possible, then the security model would be defunct. Site Collection Administrators are the only ones who can see everything, and it has nothing to do with permission levels. Yes, the problem with your requirement is that sub-sites are not independent silos...they are just small pieces of a larger container, which is the site collection, so to do what you want would require separate site collections.SharePoint Architect || My Blog
