Admin Studio Versions and Licensing

Understand there's a version of Admin Studio that comes together with Configuration Manager 2012 R2. Trying to understand and gather more infomation if the funtionality of the version is good enough or should anyone can share any considerations to note to buy the Enterprise edition etc?

ConfigMgr does not include any version of Admin Studio. Admin Studio is a separate product of a different vendor. They might have an integration, but that's it. It's not included.

Hi,

I assume you mean this version, http://www.flexerasoftware.com/landing/adminstudio-configuration-manager-get-serial.html

It is very limited, you will need to buy a license if you wan't do more advanced things, which you will end up with as well. You can also have a look at Advanced Installer which is a bit cheaper, http://www.advancedinstaller.com/

If you have Configuration Manager then I would just try the free version initially that Flexera provide. To be honest I spend 99% of my time using the standard gui table editor anyway of which there is no difference.

In later versions you do get extra stuff like built in PowerShell custom actions to choose from but I always add mine in manually anyway pointing to the powershell exe with an exe custom action. This way the PowerShell process ran is 64bit on a 64bit device and saves all sorts of funky issues.

Check out the orange brain by Leslie Easter if you can get hold of it. He also has some bits on his blog.

If the company are buying it though always go for whatever you can get :)

but if you work for one of those company's that don't like to invest in nice things then the free version will be fine for a starter if you are just using it for windows installer packaging.
