Adding server to farm, web app not created on new server
The SharePoint configuration wizard completes without error, and central admin on the original server shows that the new server is part of the farm, but the web site is not created within IIS and the wss/virtualdirectories/80 folder is not present. The is WSS 3.0 SP2 x64 on Windows Server 2008 R2. There was a previous setup on this server that I had to rebuild. Could something from that be blocking? There is also Symantec Protection installed but I am not familiar with that.

HI, What is the role of the server you can see from central administrator? Is it showing that it is hosting web application? If you try to open the sites by typing in the URL what is the result? Thanks, Rahul Rashu

Hi, I agree with Rahul. If it were a front end server, SharePoint will automatically make the changes on all of them. But if you go and make modifications in IIS manager or the file system (could be web.config) then you have to make these modifications to all Web front ends. Rahul, here are the answers to your questions. Let's say SERVERA is the original server and hosts central admin and the app. SERVERB is the second server and the one in question. 1. SERVERB shows as "Windows SharePoint Services Incoming E-Mail" and "Windows SharePoint Services Web Application" 2. Yes 3. Not found. As I said in my op, after running the SP wizard on SERVERB "the web site is not created within IIS and the wss/virtualdirectories/80 folder is not present" on SERVERB

Rock, You say "If it were a front end server, SharePoint will automatically make the changes on all of them." This is my problem, SharePoint is not making any changes on SERVERB. It is not creating the web application. "But if you go and make modifications in IIS manager or the file system (could be web.config) then you have to make these modifications to all Web front ends." - This is not relevant as the web app is not even created on SERVERB.

Hi Tom, Have you tried running the Config Wizard again? If I were you I'll remove that ServerB through the Wizard and add this back to the farm again and see what happens this time around. Also you said on your OP - "this server had a previous SP install". May be redo the OS bebore you join this server? Unless you did that already there may be registry entries from the previous install. I know this is a lot of work but better be clean in the first place. ;-) Hope this helps!BlueSky2010

Yes, ran the config wizard a few times to both remove and add the site. The previous SP install was the same site, but I have your same suspicions about the registry. Trying to avoid the OS reinstall as I don't have direct control of this server, and we are actually in the process of a complete reinstall. : )

I tried a complete SharePoint uninstall/reboot/install on SERVERB, same result. Wizard completes, site is not created in IIS.

Hello, Please excuse the basic questions. To me it seems you are attempting to add a server to a pre-existing farm and running into problems. I tried to reproduce by breaking some stuff in my environment but I couldnt reproduce this issue. 1) On Server A, are you able to browse to http://serverA? 2) On Server B, are you able to browse to http://serverA? 3) Both Server A and Server B are at same patch level? 4) Are you able to create a browse to a sample ASPX site (non-SharePoint)? 5) Is there already a website running on port 80? 6) Have you tried restarting Web Application Service only on Server B? 7) Did you chose to host Central Admin on Server B and if yes, are you able to browse to that? Please remember to click 'Mark as Answer' on the post that helps you or click 'Unmark as Answer' if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Make sure the sharepoint service timer is running in the new server because this service responsable to propagates any modifications to all servers in the Farm [any modification from Central administration] . Regards,

Sorry for the delay in responding and I appreciate everyone's support to date. I was able to successfully install a working stand-alone site on Server B. I am now going to un-unstall and attempt to re-install and connect to that farm hosted on Server A.

Update. Apparently during step 2, I can see that the web site, app pool, and content files under the 80 folder are created. About 30 seconds after the wizard completes though these are all removed, before I even click the Finish button on the dialog. I literally watched it happen, the whole 80 folder and files just disappeared in Explorer, and when I refreshed IIS manager the site and app pool were gone!
