Adding a SharePoint Group to another SharePoint Group

Hi,

I'm trying to add several exiting SharePoint groups "Group A","Group B","Group C", to another existing SharePoint group "ABC Members".  I want to do this because I will have many groups named "Group X", each with their own unique access, which I will populate with users, and then I want to grant all those groups the same access as group "ABC Members".   Having to add each user into two separate groups (Group X & ABC Members) is not preferred as when I removed a user, or wanted to add another user, being able to add/remove that user from one group would ease administration of SharePoint.

I could do this in the previous version of SharePoint I was using -- wss 3.0, but can't determine how to accomplish this in SharePoint 2013 Foundations.

Can this be done? Please help!

Hi,

Unfortunately you can not add SharePoint groups to other SharePoint groups. But you can create Group A, Group B, etc security groups on AD and add these to ABC Members SharePoint group. One disadvantage of this approach that disappoints me most: Within SharePoint, you can't check to see the members of AD group, whereas you can check the members of a SharePoint group.

You can check permissions for users in the AD group, but only after they've logged into the SharePoint site (e.g. have a UIL entry).
