Add-ons for Sharepoint to store drawings?
Are there any add-ons available online so that Sharepoint can be used to handle publication of drawings with appropriete metadata (revision A5, Reviewed, etc.). We're working on a construction project and are wondering about the qualities of Sharepoint and if it can be used for our project. We don´t need to work with .dwg files, so we don´t need an integration with a CAD program.

I'm going to assume you're asking after WSS 3 or MOSS CAD Integration can be a bit of a pain as there isn't much about. One tool that I've used with graphics, in terms of Redlining, marking up and so on is InfoGrafix Brava tools for SharePoint. There are versions for SharePoint 2007 upwards. Another tool you can consider is one called SnowBound, but I founs this tool a little unwieldy and hard to use. Neither of these work that well with x-refs but they do integrate with SharePoint, inclusive of search and document library functionality. The basic problem is that Sharepoint doesn´t allow you to store a file within another unless they are give the same name (then they are different versions of the same file). I want to be able to upload a drawing, then someone else reviews the drawing and stamps the pdf file with a "reviewed" sign, and uploads it on the web under the original drawing but the "name" of the drawing is different. This is a basic problem when a large group of people are working on a technical drawing. Does anyone have any solutions to this? Could this be programmed?

Then appropriete changes are made to the drawing and it's uploaded again with remarks "changes have been made...". This is all under the same file. Please note that I´m not endorsing this product nor am I affiliated with InfoGrafix. Brava will do all this for you. I can´t link their 2010 version as it´s off topic but this press release for the 2007 version should answer your questions. What the product will do is to add the equivalent of an acetate layer over the actual CAD file, upon which all redlining, comments and so on can be done. Whilst it COULD be programmed, I suspect it´ll be cheaper to look at the product. Let us know what you think.Steven Andrews | SharePoint Professional | http://www.twitter.com/backpackerd00d | https://baron72.wordpress.com/

Create a workflow on SharePoint Designer. You will need an approval process. In the completion phase of the overall approval process you can copy your document to another library and then set a lookup to that item in your original library item. Or maybe a new item in the same library - but you would have to tweak the view so that it they get grouped and sorted right.
