Active directory system discovery Impact Analysis
Hi, I have SCCM 2007 infrastructure and we are only using heartbeat discovery which is by default. There are 3000+ systems with SCCM clients installed. I am also working on SCSM 2010 deployement project where I need some csutom attributes like System OU, AD Object SID etc. If I enable both AD system discovery and AD system group discovery which would help me to to get these additional fields in SCSM CMDB, is there any impact on performance of existing SCCM infrastructure? Thanks in adv! Cheers- Guru

I don't think it will create any major impact looking at your client count. May be you can do it after office hours.Anoop C Nair - @anoopmannur MY BLOG: http://anoopmannur.wordpress.com User Group: ConfigMgr Professionals This posting is provided AS-IS with no warranties/guarantees and confers no rights.

Will it create impact? Yes. At whatever scheduled time you have configured the site server will scan AD and resolve systes in DNS as needed and then generate DDRs as needed. Is this impact major? Depends on the specifications of yor hardware and if your system is already overworked. Since this isn't a constant activity and is actually relatively lightweight, you probably won't even notice it happening. In general, most small to medium ConfigMgr implementations (yours falls on the smaller side) use AD Discovery without any issues. Adding custom attributes to the mix shouldn't affect much unless you're adding every attribute possible or something outlandish like that. At the end of the day though, only you can truly determine performance impact because your environmet and infrastrucutre is completely unique to you. That's where perofrmance baseling using perfmon comes in as well as first-class monitoring tools like OpsMgr.Jason | http://blog.configmgrftw.com | Twitter @JasonSandys
