Action not allowed in pause state: InstallUpdates failed, error 80040271

Hi, i use a TS to patch our systems.

There are a few that do not apply software updates to the client during the advert.

The problem is precisely descripted here:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/configmgrsum/thread/59779d57-1239-41cb-91d1-7b8836626ee8

And i have tried the suggestion found here:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/configmgrswdist/thread/42114c0f-9de8-4a2c-9dac-1bac842b1d8a

by reseting these keys to 0:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SMS\Mobile Client\Software Distribution\State
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SMS\Task Sequence

but it has not changed the situation. Still cannot apply updates.

I have also tried using the SCCM client center tool Client Actions-->SCCM Action-->Reset Paused SWDist to reset the pause but nothing works.

It has been about 19 hours and i still cannot get these few systems "un-paused" so that i can apply updates.

Typically they come around after 24 hrs or so, but kind of annoying.

Anyone have any suggestions?...how can i "un-pause" these systems.

Hi,

Please check the updateshandler.log to see if the update content was available for download. Also, check if the MP is functional.

Regards,

Thanks, but that's all good.

We patch hundreds of sytems is the window and this is a sporadic event that only happens occasionally, and to different systems.

It is somehing local to the client.

I have a call open with MS, but i'm getting no where there. Hopefully we can figure this out and i'll post the results.

Thanks.

Hope this helps anyone in this boat...

As i understand it, when a TS runs it pauses software distribution and software updates so that those processes will not interfere with any actions that the TS is taking.

For whatever reason, in our case the affected systems do not pickup the pause cookie after a reboot and are thus left in a paused state.

Our particular case was patching. so in this case reseting these keys to 0 will not resume software updates:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SMS\Mobile Client\Software Distribution\State
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SMS\Task Sequence

You must delete any instance of a pause state from \\root\ccm\softwareupdates\deploymentagent\CCM_ComponentState

Then you can resume software updates.

I suspect there is a similar pause state for software distribution

Where is  \\root\ccm\softwareupdates\deploymentagent\CCM_ComponentState location?

Is it a Local C:\Windows\CCM\...... or C:\windows\system32\CCM? I cannot find both on Windows 7 computer. Please advice.

Thanks.........................
