Accessing SharePoint via UNC Path Causes Password Prompt
I have a script that has to use a UNC path to drop a file into a SharePoint document library. For some users on some computers when they try to access the SharePoint site (http://Sharepoint) via the UNC Path (\\Sharepoint) they get a password prompt. Most users do not get a password prompt and get let right in. I have checked all the obvious things like zone settings, saved network passwords, etc. If I log a user that gets a password prompt into a different machine (that isn't having the problem) then it works just fine. This indicates to me that it is a client issue as opposed to a user issue.

Hello, Please try to select automatic logon only in Intranet zone in IE->internet options->security settings on the machine the user will logon to access sharepoint site. If problem still exist, please feel free to let me know. Regards, JerryXing-Bing Yu

I am not having a problem accessing the SharePoint site, as I described above. This is not the solution the my problem.

we had similar problems for long time and tried all kinds of solution but re-building the machine solves the problem: In theory OS updates messed up the machine so that the WebDav client could not make right requests to the SharePoint server, while IE can in our case. This seems the most time-saving solution.

you might not be using webdav (for example FP extensions) when accessing a network share on that PC. Run network monitor to see what happens, or as it was said, remaster the machine.

how do I know which client tool it is using to access SharePoint through UNC Path? seems no document at all. What network monitor tool will tell this? Tried Fiddler. thanks,

fiddler will monitor http requests only... use "network monitor 3.4" from MS (or wireshark... etc) this can come from a lot of reasons, starting with the webdav client being rewritten from vista on. can you reach both http://doclib and \\doclib from the client computer? Also, there was a white paper on explorer view a while ago, mmmh... edit : here it is http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=c523ac7a-5724-48be-b973-641e805588f4 the problem being machine based indicates a reg key or a hotfix, or some conflicting office dlls, thou, imo. the werid thing is that Http: and window exploer view always work and never failed for any computer. However unc path access failed for this computer occasionally. Sometime, the feature came back magically. Now we rebuilt the machine: so far so good. I agree som OS hotfix problems. thanks,
