Access workflow from form and form fields from workflow to allow changing of fields in form library

Okay folks hope you are all well,

I have a form library with a approval workflow that runs on submit/save to the library - users are occasionally "approving" in the form which is not stopping the workflow...

soo...

How can you access the "current item" IN the workflow form so that I can customise the "accept form" and add a field from the form to allow users to enter a reference number in the "Approval form" when an "Approval Task" is run and actioned?

Symbiotically IF the user opens the FORM ("current item" effectively rather than the workflow form) what do I need to do to make sure that the actions in the FORM successfully trigger the "accept/reject" in the workflow successfully?

Rethinking this I think the DIRECTION is NOT to update the InfoPath form to modify the workflow but to use the "promoted fields" to influence the "completion" of the workflow and/or tasks...

Can anyone guide me in how you do this - the workflow is simply a new workflow with a single "Approval" step, to which I've modified the emails a little...?

GUESSING:
if the InfoPath form does something (Submit? Save? Update?)
this will trigger the WF to "assess" itself?
then WF can "see" promoted fields (eg: "if field is equal to X") and this can be similar to the task form being updated and have the same impact...

What do I need to read/be aware of doing this?

I think I may be confused about the PURPOSE of the approval workflow...

its possibly that I had over simplified the needs of the form and the approval purpose.

While I need the users to review and "APPROVE" the form, I think using an approval workflow/action/task is not actually what I want... I think what I need is a custom workflow that sends and email to the reviewer and then waits until the reviewer updates the form...

If this IS what I want/need... where do I start on this approach?

Hi,

The form from form library is used for design the form in the library. Approval workflow form is used as approval task form, it displays when a user approve/reject a task.

In approval workflow email, there is a review link for the item, the approver can click it to review the item, and the approver can approve the task via clicking "Open this task". You can also customize the email body, and add the related item or task into it.
