Access SharePoint site without giving port no.
Hi All, I have created a web applicaton and then a site collection in SharePoint 2007. While creating I have removed the port no and given my customized name e.g. http://training Web Application and site collection is created successfully. But when I try to browse my site with http://training it displays a error as page cannot be found. But when I browse the site with http://servername:portno I can browse my site. So how to access the site without port no. i.e. using http://training Your help is much appreciated. Thanx in advance

You need to add training to the DNS server your workstation uses for resolving names to IP addresses. Also to access a SharePoint site without a port number you need to use either port 80 (for http) or port 443 for (for https). You can't access a SharePoint site without using a port number, but port 80 is assumed when you access a site using http. You should look at the properties of you web application to make sure it was created on port 80.Paul Stork SharePoint Server MVP

Hi Paul, I have created my SharePoint site on port 80. Also did some alternate access mapping as found on other forums, but no success. Could you please explain me how to add training to DNS server. Does working on DNS server will affect my already existing sites in the farm? Please answer. Waiting for your reply. Thanx in advance.

This is not specific to SharePoint, instead its how TCP/IP works. When you try to access a web site your computer will send the request to a DNS server to resolve the name into an IP address so that it can find the server and route the request across the network. YOur SharePoint server has already registered its name with DNS because it is part of the domain. So when you use the SErvername of the computer it can resolve it to the server's IP address. But when you create a new web site or AAM on a SharePoint server that doesn't use the server name then the DNS server doesn't know how to resolve that name to an address. Since it can't resolve the name to an IP address it can't find the web site on the web server and you get an error. That's why you get the error that the site can't be found. Your local DNS server is on your domain controller. YOu need to talk to a network admin about getting the name or AAM you have added added as a record in the DNS server. Adding the new name will have no effect on your existing sites.Paul Stork SharePoint Server MVP
