64 bit vs. 64 bit

Downloaded SQL Server Express 2008 (SQLEXPR_x64_ENU.exe) and SQL Server Management Studio

(SQLManagementStudio_x64_ENU.exe). Both were downloaded from Microsoft.com. Both are 64 bit versions to install on my Win7 64 bit machine. When installing, both produce the same error message:

"The current operation system is of X64 architecture. This media is not supported for running on the system."

Again, 64 bit software for a 64 bit machine.

Is MS uploading corrupt files?

Please advise.

The installation media is definitely corrupt I have not faced this issue but I am aware about this issue. You can install both 32 bit and 64 bit SQL Server on 64 bit OS so there is no limitation at all.

Can you please try downloading again

I will try again.

Meanwhile, is the Management Studio stand alone/all inclusive? Or must SQL Server engine be installed first? What is the correct way and sequence to install both? I have read many blog/forum posts where users are having problems getting Management Studio installed and running correctly.

For express edition what you are downloading its a separate installable for ent, stand, evaluation web it is embedded in main installable.

It does not matter whatever you install first there is no restriction as such. But I would suggest to install database engine first

Downloaded both files a second time. Still get error message when trying to install.

Guess I will try the 32 bit versions.

Does MS even know or care that they either have corrupt or mislabeled files?

Are you downloading it from MS website ?

Ok if this is not working may i suggest why not try SQL Server 2012/2014 express you would get larger allowed datafile size in 2008 you had limitation of 4G from 2008 r2 onwards you have 10G. I would suggest you to download SQL Server 2014 express

Yes, I am downloading from the Microsoft Download Center.

Tried to download both SQL Server 2012 and 2014 Express. After choosing which files to download and hitting the "Next" button, nothing happens. It just goes to the "Thank you for downloading" page, but it never downloads nor prompts me for a save location. Trying again just cycles though the two pages. Nothing ever happens.

What a joke.

I'd see what happens with the full SQL Server. I don't think this is an issue with the install. I'd think it's more related to your internet connection and the ability to save a large file successfully.  If you are installing this for work or as a student then perhaps you can get the install media from your work or school. You may also want to try to download onto a thumb drive from a different machine.

Ok this is because you download is blocked by Browser you are using. So what browser you are using I use firefox and I get something as per below. I go and unblock it I am sure whatever browser you are using is blocking it , unblock it and it would start downloading
