500.19 Internal Server error on persistent chat external page

Persistent Chat is collocated on Standard Edition FE server.

When trying to get to the web page to create a room externally I get a 500 Internal Server Error.

Digging deeper I get a 500.19 Internal Server Error

Error Code: 0x80070021

Config Error: Configuration section not allowed to be set below application

Config Source:

8: <system.WebServer>

9: <modules>   (this one is in red and italics)

10: <remove name="preAuthModule" />

Anyone have any ideas here?

I got the same error after I installed the last cumulative update.

To fix it: Expand "Lync Server External Web Site" in IIS Manager, right click on PersistentChat directory and chose Convert To Application.

I checked the file C:\Program Files\Microsoft Lync Server 2013\Web Components\PersistentChat\Ext\web.config before update. And this one did not contain the <modules> section before.

Hey,

just updated the Lync-servers to the latest CU (December 2014).

Our chat-server is not collocated, but nonetheless the error 500 was offered when trying to access lync-ext (create chat room).

On the FE-servers' IIS - I did Pavel's trick and voil, the error disappeared immediately.

So: IIS - Lync Server External Web Site - Right-click on PersistentChat -directory and choose Convert to Application - (OK).

Thanks a bunch,
