2013 Online, public facing site, new user Self-Registration capability?

Hello,

We are developing a public facing site in SharePoint 2013 Online. The client would like to have new users register for an account, get a login and reset their PW on their own. I have read about Form Based Auth, and a few plugins for SharePoint that make this possible when installed to an on-premesis SharePoint server (need access to the SQL database and IIS).

Being this is SharePoint Online only, we are looking to stay away from on-prem, is there a new user Self-Registration capability, or can we run FBA on SharePoint 2013 Online?

Thanks,

Jason

Since you don't have access to the Web.config files on the server there is no way to implement FBA in a SharePoint Online environment.  For Authentication its either O365 user Account (Azure AD) or Microsoft Account (Windows Live).  Users can sign up for a Windows Live ID and manage their password using functionality that is already in place.  But you would need to create some kind of App that allowed them to register their Windows Live ID account with the Public facing site.  About the only way I can think to do that is by leveraging a Provider hosted App in Azure.  I think it could be done but it would be a lot of work.
