2012 R2 DPM - What to backup?

I am finding DPM to be "interesting". I can choose shares, volumes, system and any SQL that may be present. Wouldn't a volume backup include shares and system? Why backup shares and volume? Additionally, doesn't BMR include System State? So why are they separated with "system" listed?

I can see how you would backup multiple things if you want a variety of restore options. For example, you want to restore just the system state, or a particular share, but you do the later from a volume backup by browsing the explorer tree in the recovery console.

Thank you

Hi,

In a word "flexibility" - DPM allows you to protect the same data in a few different ways, but with some caveats.

Backup up a volume will include all files on the volume including those under shares.  However, for boot volumes like C: volume, some files are not backed up and only included in systemstate.  See Unsupported Data Types

For easy protection of shared files, protecting shares is the best way.  If you have "end user recovery" (EUR) enabled, it does not matter if you protect individual shares or the entire volume, clients will be able to perform EUR either way.

Yes BMR protection does include systemstate, but not the other way around, so we need to have two check boxes for you to chose from.
