I have a Windows 2008 R2 Standard application server box, actually this is a PC. I bought the new one. I want to install Windows 2012 R2 on the new box and properly licensing it, the old box will be formatted. The existing server license is retail.

Can I convert the existing 2008 R2 license to Windows 2012 R2 Standard license?

Can I convert the existing per-device CAL to Windows 2012 R2?

Hello,

there is no way to upgrade a Windows Server 2008 R2 license to Windows Server 2012 R2. You have to buy a NEW license.
