2007 to 2010 migration (database attached read only)
Hello everyone, I just got a new SharePoint admin postion at a company running there intranet portal. This is my first SharePoint postion. Its a very customized portal and they want me to start the migration process over to 2010 using the database attached read only method. Ive never done this before and wanted to know if anyone had any tips or recommendations on where to start? Ive got all the documentation from technet and other websites on how to use this method and pre and post upgrade migration such as running the preupgrade checker (This tool does not tell you how to check for customizations) but where can I find the detailed instructions on how to look for and transfer over customizations also how do I get a list of all the ip address and servers in the farm. The company has no documentation on that so I have to do it. Thanks everyone.Lee McGhee

Hi McGheeTech79, When you upgrade from Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 to Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 by using the database attach upgrade approach, you upgrade only the content for your environment and not the configuration settings. Using a database attach upgrade approach is useful when you are changing hardware or want to reconfigure your server farm topology as part of the upgrade process. For more information about how to choose an upgrade approach, see Determine upgrade approach (SharePoint Server 2010). The first step in the process is to set up a new environment to host the upgraded content. If you have not yet set up and configured the new environment, follow the steps in Prepare the new SharePoint Server 2010 environment for a database attach upgrade to do so. You must create a Web application in the new environment for every Web application in the old environment, copy any server-side customizations, configure services, and apply any farm settings to the new environment. After you set up the new environment, you can use the procedures in this article to detach and then reconnect the databases to perform the actual upgrade. This article contains the steps required to perform a standard database attach upgrade and a database attach upgrade with read-only databases. For more information, please refer to the following link: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc263299.aspx Thanks, Lhan Han

The pre-upgradechecker report should have given you most of the information (list of ip addresses, servers, etc) you are required to troubleshoot before the upgrade. Here are another useful stsadm command operations you may need to get more details: -o enumallwebs -includefeatures -includesetupfiles -includewebparts -includeeventreceivers -includecustomlistview Most of the customizations can be found via the output.
