100% cpu usage for windows server not reported!
HI! All, Strange thing - we are monitoring all windows server 2003 and 2008. One of the 2003 server had 100% cpu usage for over 15 mins and we got alerts from other monitoring systems but opsmgr did not display msg on console nor was an email is generated. I see total cpu utilization percentage is enabled and set to true and CPU % utilization threshold is 95%. Can someone pl help - this is really not helping and Iam not sure how to debug. Many thanks Venn

Based on the information you have provided, it’s hard to pinpoint the issue. Few things that you should check: • Are there any errors in the Operation Manager log on client or SCOM management server? • Is the agent, RMS and MS health status green tick (healthy) in the SCOM console? • Open health Explorer for the agent, goto the Total CPU Utilisation monitor and check the State Change Events for status history of the CPU utilisation monitor, see if it has any record of change in monitor health status. • Is there any override configured for that server or for the total CPU utilisation monitor? Also remember that total CPU utilisation monitor is a “Consecutive Samples over Threshold” monitor. Hope this point you in some direction. Kind Regards Tim (Canberra)

If you checked the server in question using Health Explorer, and verified that the CPU Percentage Utilization monitors properties, and don't see a state change, make sure there isn't an override to that monitor that changed it, by looking at the override summary for that monitor. Also verify that the agent was actually functioning during this time, by checking the opsmgr agent log on the machine. The default threshold is 95 % over 5 samples, which are collected every two minutes. Hi, did you ever got an alert about CPU Percentage Utilization ? i'm asking this question because i had the same issue on customer site this week. i dont remember the OS MP version but it was strange to me that the "generate alert" paramter for this monitor (2 diffrent monitors, one for 2003 and one for 2008) was false i've created an override to both monitors and alerts start showing in the console. This 'Total CPU Utilization Percentage' monitor for the Operating System Performance seems to trip everybody up. Something to be aware of with this monitor is that the threshhold for CPU queue length threshold is multiplied by the number of processors you have. See the answer here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/operationsmanagergeneral/thread/99b19960-1380-474a-be58-95647f58fd31. Both CPU utilisation and queue length threshhold x CPU cores need to be breached. E.g. 4 cores at default queue length of 15 means that the threshhold is 60 which must be breached for two consecutive samples. Hope this helps.
