"No internet access" symbol while internet is online

Windows 7 Pro 64 in a 2008 R2 Domain.

We get constantly the "No internet access" symbol which was no problem unless we started to use Office 2013. Especially OneNote will not connect to any online shared notbeooks.

http://www.msftncsi.com/ncsi.txt can be reached

nslookup dns.msftncsi.com
Server:  mydns   Address:  10.110.81.101

Non-authoritative answer:
Name:    dns.msftncsi.com
Addresses:  fd3e:4f5a:5b81::1 131.107.255.255

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Key path SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\NlaSvc\Parameters\Internet
Value name EnableActiveProbing

is set to 0

GPO: Administrative Templates/System/Internet Communication Management/Internet Communication setting
Turn off Windows Network Connectivity Status Indicator active tests : Enabled

Still there is a 50% chance that I get the
"No internet access" symbol, while I am connected to the domain and can reach the internet. No proxy used and we sit directly at the Vienna VIX.

Hi,

According to your description, it seems like only when Office 2013 was started up, the problem occurs, isn't it?

Have you tried to repair Office problem for test?

Under uninstall Programs in Control Panel, right click Office, then choose Repair.

Is this problem just occurs on the only one machine, how about others?

You can check Device Manager to check if there extra Internet device was installed.

No, sorry for that misunderstanding.

There was no effect for us when Windows 7 did show there is no internet connection UNTIL we installed Office 2013 which relies in this status. The source of the problem has nothing to do with Office 2013.

So it sounds like you are online but the symbol shows you are not?  What happens when you restart the network location awareness in services.msc

Hi,

Based on my research, this is probably Network Connection Status Indicator (NCSI) problem. Of cours NCSI can be cause DNS or Web connection problem. According to your problem, I doubt it's DNS Server problem.

Firstly, You can access to the link below for more details about NCSI:

http://blogs.technet.com/b/networking/archive/2012/12/20/the-network-connection-status-icon.aspx

Seconldy, we need to confirm if it's NCSI configuration problem. You need to access to the path below to check if there is abnormal:

Registry:

HKLM\ SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\NetworkConnectivityStatusIndicator

Group Policy:

Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Internet Communication Management\Internet Communication settings\Turn off Windows Network Connectivity Status Indicator active tests

Thirdly, check if there is  any Firewall or VPN Client updates installed recently because Firewall is still the possible reason of this problem.

In the end, if it's not NCSI problem, it should be DNS Server problem because there is many computers have similar problem as you mentioned. Please contact the Domain Administrator

is this affecting a particular PC or several machines ? If former please run the below command and it should rectify your issue

cmd--netsh--winsock--reset

restart.

If domain/workgroup machines are affected then there some network related software running which is having a conflict.

a MSconfig should show all running programs.

I am the domain admin ;)

And please check my initial posting I already have turned off all checks with GPO and registry, so all these checks should be not necessary, or am I missing something? We just do not want Windows to check for an internet connection.

Several PCs and all are domain joined. I will try your command and restart the service (like posted above) as soon as it turns up again. Since I posted here the problem is gone ;)

Tried that and it tells me we must restart the computer. Since their is a 50% chance it will work after a restart I have no idea if this really solves anything. But the workstation had no error afterwards :)

Hi,

We may need to more troubleshooting with DNS client or server.

Firstly, use ipconfig /all command to check the problematic client network configuration information.

It would be better to use Ipconfig /renew command to force the client the renew Ip address from DHCP.

Secondly, check the connection between client and DNS server with Ping command.

You can refer to the link below for more details about DNS troubleshooting on Client and Server.

There is no problem with our DNS, everything is working fine. Please see my first post:
